Dasi Mantri Mata Rambha Lakshmi and Dharitri - The roles
Today I wish to talk about the shloka
"Karyeshu Dasi, Karaneshu Mantri,
Bhojyeshu Mata, Shayaneshu Rambha,
Roopeshu Lakshmi, Kshamayeshu Dharitri,
Shath dharma yuktah, kula dharma patni"
There have been many interpretations of this shloka. The most accepted one is "a woman who works like a servant, advises like a minister, feeds you like a mother, pleases you in bed like sylph (a beautiful goddess), is the embodiment of goddess lakshmi, forgives you with patience as that of mother Earth, that woman who possesses these six virtues is your true wife who can share the dharma of you and your family".
So, is this the interpretation? But this makes no woman eligible to be a wife. Not every woman is sylphlike, not every woman possesses intelligence enough to advise you, not every woman can please you in bed, not every woman can dress up and prance around in anklets, not every woman can forgive your monumental mistakes and definitely not every woman can feed you unless you give her the reason to. At this rate, this shloka is purely imaginary and the man ( I doubt a woman would write this) who wrote this must be delusional.
On the other hand, there is a simple, yet closer to reality interpretation of this shloka. It can be interpreted as follows:
A woman who
1. Can understand that no work is beneath her and is humble enough to understand that all human beings work to feed themselves (she would know that servants or kings either are equal)
2. Can guide her family towards the good and the righteous by educating them and making them aware
3. Will keep her family healthy and happy and involve each and every member of the family in loving and cherishing each other
4. knows that sex is a part of life and is not shy to indulge or shun in instead is frank about her wants and desires with her husband
5. Will make sure that her family is content with whatever they have and will not moan and mope over things they don't have
6. Will make sure that her family never makes any unforgivable mistakes by teaching them what is right and what is wrong and always to respect each other
The woman who is an embodiment of all these qualities will make her husband and his family an inspiration for the world because men cannot be the nurturers that women are.
And that's about it.
